CAP-FIAT 500 Scoiattolo 1971
Carrosserie Arrigo Perini
Châssis n° 2745156
Moteur n° 110F-000-2244153

1971 CAP-FIAT 500 Scoiattolo
Coachwork by Carrozzeria Arrigo Perini
Chassis no. 2745156
Engine no. 110F-000-2244153

•Ultra-rare Italian beach car
•Registered new to CAP and kept until 1981
•Believed-correct total of 38,000 kilometres recorded
•Eligible for the 60th anniversary celebrations of the model

FIAT's Nuova 500 was the Italian coachbuilders' favourite subject for imaginative reinterpretation, most notably by Carrozzeria Ghia, which was responsible for the immensely successful 'Jolly' beach car. The Scoiattolo (squirrel) was the work of the little-known Carrozzeria Arrigo Perini (CAP), and appears to have been inspired by the Mini Moke. Arrigo Perini completed the first Scoiattolo prototype, which was based on a FIAT 500 floor pan, in 1967. The Scoiattolo met with a favourable reception, and by 1969 FIAT had approved Perini's design on a new chassis drawn up by him. The project was eventually sold on, continuing under new ownership as the Baltera.

This ultra-rare derivative of the immortal FIAT 500 was registered in the name of its manufacturer, Carrozzeria Arrigo Perini of Riva del Garda on the Northern shores of Lake Garda, and remained in their possession until 1981. An identical Scoiattolo (possibly this one) was used in their publicity brochure, a copy of which is offered with the car. Described by the vendor is in generally good condition, this is a fun and cheap alternative to the much more costly FIAT 500 Jolly beach cars and yet offers greater versatility; it can be used with or without doors, and even the windscreen folds flat for real 'wind in the hair' motoring. It is believed that no more than 200 of these fun little vehicles were produced. Finished in bright orange with black interior, the car displays a believed-correct total of 38,000 kilometres on the odometer and is ready for the Côte d'Azur, where envious looks are guaranteed.
