Footnotes

  • This rare trophy remains the only known cup won by Robert "Bobby" Jones, and is considered to be the earliest known prize won by the renowned golfer.

In the summer of 1916 by the Cherokee Country Club, Knoxville, Tennessee hosted a 3 day invitational tournament in match-play format in which 128 players entered. Amongst the competitors was a 14 yr old school boy from Atlanta, the then virtually unknown Robert T. Jones. Despite his age, Bobby claimed the final round after just fourteen holes with a four over 5 victory over runner up Simpson Dean (Rome, GA).

Robert "Bobby" Jones (1902-1971) is widely regarded to be one of the greatest golfers of all time. A lawyer by profession, Jones competed in golfing championships in a part time basis. Jones reached his peak during 1923-30 when he won 13/21 national championships. Making history aged 28, he also went onto win the golfing 'Grand Slam' by winning all the major golf tournaments - The U.S. Amateur, U.S. Open, Amateur, and Open Championships in 1930 - and remains the only golfer to achieve this extraordinary feat.

In this year Jones retired from golf, and in 1933 went on to design the Augusta National Golf Club, and co-founded the Masters Tournament - which has been staged annually (with the exception of 1943-45) ever since.
