The 77.5cm sighted barrel, stamped 'W. Greener, Birmingham 1867' and 'Polynia', with shaped tang, plain back action lock, figured full stock, stamped 'Polynia', the steel trigger guard and butt plate and turned ramrod pipes together with a folder of research into the ship Polynia, this includes two letters from W. W. Greener, and various other reference materials relating to the loss of the ship.

  • Identified through the stamp 'Polynia' on the barrel and stock, this percussion gun has been linked to the 19th century Scottish whaling and sealing ship Polynia. This theory is strengthened further by the absence of stamps on the metal areas of the weapon. Whilst exposed to salt water and air frequent scrubbing of weapons such as this was necessary to counter corrosion. This could also account for the absence of the maker's name from the lock plate and serial number on the tang of trigger guard.

    The Polynia was built in 1861 in Dundee by the Dundee Seal and Whale Fishing Company Fleet. The whaler was commanded by Captain William Guy from 1883 - 1891 and was lost in this year in the Davis Strait, reportedly by two large ice floes roughly 2 miles in circumference. Her rudder and sternpost were quickly smashed and she sank roughly six hours later. Her 36 strong crew and captain bailed out and were rescued by the steam yacht Aurora.
