    The British Institution, 1821, cat.no.17

This picture relates to Reading the Will, commissioned by the King of Bavaria and still held in the New Pinakothek, Munich.

Born at Cults in Fife, Sir David Wilkie achieved international fame as one of the foremost British artists of the 19th Century. He was particularly celebrated for his genre paintings, which come rarely to the market. This is an archetypal (and timeless) theme for Wilkie, giving free reign to his unerring eye for vivid humour and incident.

Wilkie wrote Townsend in January 1820
"The little picture of the Will I have worked upon very much since I had the pleasure of seeing you, and have completed it so much, both in finishing the parts and in giving solidity to its general effect that it may no longer be considered as a sketch."
