Footnotes

  • An almost identical table, attributed to Gillows, but lacking the gallery on this table was sold Bonhams, London, Fine English Furniture and Works of Art, June 13, 2012, lot 138.

The lyre ends of this table are a typical feature of Gillows. See Susan Stuart, Gillows of London and Lancaster, 1730-1840, Woodbridge, 2008, vol.I, pl.332, p.303 for a table with similar lyre supports.

The star handles are another Gillows feature. A rosewood games table with similar handles, attributed to Gillows, was offered Sotheby's London, November 22, 2006, Lot 98.

Star shaped handles of the kind seen here also relate to the work of Regency cabinetmakers John McLean and Sons, who specialized in furniture with gilt-brass mounts in the French manner. A sofa table with star handles, labeled by McLean, is illustrated in Furniture History, 1978, plate 41b.
