Footnotes

  • 象牙彫根付 寿老人と雄鹿 銘「楽」 19世紀前期

    Published: Katchen, N7, vol.1, p.187, no.K756.

The god standing, smiling while holding the antler of a stag which rests at his feet, gazing up to its master with inlaid eyes, the slightly worn ivory bearing a good patina.

The name Raku has been seen on a number of netsuke of differing subject and type and may be an abbreviation of a small group of artists' names, perhaps followers of Risuke Garaku, working in Osaka during the early part of the 19th century.

For an almost identical example, signed Raku, see Harris, HGBM, p.26, no.24.
