Footnotes

  • Provenance
    Christie's New York, 10 October 1993, lot 120
    Reif Collection
    Albert Pyke Collection, Los Angeles

The motif of bronze vessels accompanied by inscriptions in Zhou dynasty style seal script is a testament to the academic revival of ancient texts in metal and stone (Jinshixue) in the late Qing dynasty. The popularization of this 'antique aesthetic' had a profound impact on the painting, calligraphy and the decorative arts of the 19th century. A similar lacquer inlaid bottle, formerly in the Barron collection, was sold at Christie's 16 March 2016, lot 414.
