Footnotes

  • Provenance
The artist's family and thence by descent to the current owner.

Vincent Jerome Esch first travelled to India in 1898 to work on the construction of the Bengal-Nagpur railway and subsequently enjoyed twenty five years of architectural success in Calcutta. The colonial and classical style of his career in Calcutta can be seen in buildings such as the Bengal Club in Chowringhee and the Allahabad Bank, his success culminating in his appointment as superintending architect of the Victoria Memorial Hall. The Hyderabad city high school depicted in this watercolour was designed while Esch was working for the Nizam of Hyderabad of the time, Osman Ali Khan. He also designed a number of other public buildings in the city including the railway station, the high court and the Osmania General Hospital. Leaving behind the classical style which characterised his designs in Calcutta, Esch became a proponent of what is now known as Indo-Saracenic architecture, drawing ideas from the Islamic architecture of Southern India. His work in India was recognised in 1922 when he was awarded the CVO (Commander of the Victorian Order) award however on his return to England he only enjoyed limited success in comparison to his Indian exploits.
