Footnotes

  • Introduced in the 1936, the Peugeot 302/402 series had clearly been influenced by the Chrysler Airflow of 1934. Initially rejected by American buyers as too radical, this streamlined look was eagerly adopted by European manufacturers including Peugeot, BMW, and FIAT. The 302/402 chassis also formed the basis for the very successful Peugeot Darl'Mat coupés entered at Le Mans in 1937.

The vendor has owned three of these Peugeot Airstream saloons, but another acquisition requires him to part with the last and best one: the 1937 car offered for sale here, which was delivered new to Lyons in 1937. It is the most attractive of the three, and was restored some 16/20 years ago in France by a retired aircraft engineer. The original engine has been retained together with the outstandingly original interior featuring the original carpets, mats, seats, panels, and period accessories. Within the last 500 kilometres, the following work has been carried out: carburettor rebuilt, new battery and battery tray, new brake linings, rebuilt fuel pump, and conversion to Ducellier two-brush dynamo and regulator.

The car has covered 76,167 kilometres (approximately 47,330 miles) from new and is probably the most original Peugeot 302 currently for sale, combining a charmingly mellowed appearance with restored mechanicals. The vendor has used the car regularly over the last year or so. In 2015 it successfully completed the Fougères Rally in Normandy and a trip to the Goodwood Revival, which was followed by the Automobile meeting at Rutland Water last September. We are advised that the car displays constant oil pressure, and has a reasonable cruising speed and effective brakes and steering; it also has an electric cooling fan to cope with stationary traffic. 'On the button', the car is offered with a V5C document, copies of the old French registration documents, an original driver's handbook, and Peugeot Lettre D'Attestation confirming the date of manufacture.
Rarer than the rival Citroën Traction 7C, this Peugeot 302 is a charming and quirky example of French aerodynamic styling from the mid 1930s.
