The 4.5-litre version of the 280 SE (Type W108) typifies the resurgence of larger-engined Mercedes-Benz models that began in the late 1960s and early 1970s, when the progressive easing of fiscal constraints, which had dissuaded customers from buying cars with large capacity engines, encouraged the German manufacturer to offer bigger, more potent power units. Thus the ultra-luxurious 450 SL Roadster/Coupé was the model chosen by Mercedes-Benz to launch its magnificent new 4.5-litre V8 engine in 1971. An over-square design featuring a cast-iron block and aluminium-alloy cylinder heads, each equipped with a single overhead camshaft, this all-new, state-of-the-art power unit produced 225bhp courtesy of Bosch electronic fuel injection and transistorised ignition. This larger V8 engine helped meet the demands of the vitally important United States market and was soon outselling the less powerful 3.5-litre version. As usual, there was also an 'SEL' model on a longer wheelbase. Although W108 sales worldwide reached nearly 383,000, the 280 SEL 4.5 achieved fewer than 22,000, making it relatively rare. These cars were also the last Mercedes-Benz models with the classic stacked headlamps.

Previously resident in the USA, this exceptionally well cared for 280 SEL 4.5 had enjoyed only two owners before it was purchased by the current vendor in America in 2009, since when it has formed part of an exclusive private collection in the UK. The car retains its original Moss Green paint and Bamboo leather interior, an unusual and beautiful colour combination. As one would expect of a car of this quality, it is also very well equipped, boasting central locking, a Becker Europa radio, automatic aerial, heat insulating glass with heated rear window, and front and rear air conditioning. Ideal for the serious Mercedes-Benz collector, the car comes with New Jersey title, proof of EU duties paid, (copy) MB data card, tool kit, owner's wallet and manual. A rare find in such beautiful condition, this amazing 280 SEL 4.5 looks like a two-year-old car.
