Footnotes

  • The Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso a Eclipse is a beautiful example of how Jaeger have pushed the boundaries in the way they showcase their exquisite enamel work. For a while now the Reverso model could be customised to depict beautiful miniatures of famous paintings, in particular those of the work by Alphonse Mucha. With the Eclipse, Jaeger have gone further in their desire to make their watches truly unique. A small wheel situated at 2 o'clock allows the user to actuate a patented shutter system which reveals the beautiful hand painted enamel scene beneath at will. The versatility of this design allows the user to disclose the secrets of their watch at their discretion making it a truly personal timepiece to possess.

The present lot, revealing the 'Presumed Portrait of Gabrielle d'Estrées and Her Sister, the Duchess of Villars', comes from Jaegers series featuring famous nudes in art. The painting depicts two women, believed to be Gabrielle d'Estrées, Duchess of Beaufort and Verneuil, and her sister the Duchess of Villars, in their bath. Gabrielle d'Estrées was a mistress of the French king, Henry IV and the intimate hand gesture depicted is believed to symbolise Gabrielles pregnancy with the illegitimate child of Henry IV whose ring she is holding.

The original painting is housed in the Louvre, Paris, and is representative of the second School of Fontainbleu dated around c.1594. The painting joined the collection in 1937 but the original artist still remains a mystery to Art experts to this day.

Production of this watch was limited to just 5 pieces.
