Footnotes

  • Based on the overall form and proportions of this pair of candelabra, as well as the radiating sweep of the arms, spiral beaded stems and elements of Neoclassic decoration mixed with Art Nouveau lines, the design could be attributed to Charles Grosjean. Known for his eclectic intermingling of styles and combinations of varying decorative motifs, he was responsible for designing the Chrysanthemum pattern in 1880 and contributed to the design of the famously elaborate and extensive Mackay service.

The architectural sensibility of the structure of the pieces offered here resemble his Chrysanthemum pattern candelabra and the foliage and acanthus scroll-headed paw feet are reminiscent of Grosjean's large candelabra made for either Cornelius or William K. Vanderbilt in 1883 (see J. Loring Magnificent Tiffany Silver, New York, 2001, pp.141-142).
