Footnotes

  • La Schiava Greca (the Greek Slave) was one of the most celebrated compositions by Scipione Tadolini. Tadolini's work follows in the style of the great late 18th/early 19th century Venetian sculptor, Antonio Canova. Tadolini's father, Adamo, was one of Canova's assistants and Scipione trained and worked closely with his father. This particular model was most likely inspired by Hiram Power's Greek Slave, exhibited for the first time at the Great Exhibition in London in 1851.
