Footnotes

  • Fashion often dictates the new direction in jewelry, which is true of this diamond brooch. Following the gold, bold jewelry created up until the end of World War II, the 1950's signaled a time of prosperity. The custom of wearing diamond jewelry returned and once again became fashionable. The feminine form became celebrated - tiny waists and visible curves were in vogue, the flared skirts and fitted tops, accessorized with fringe necklaces, three dimensional brooches and diamond ear pendants. Designers such as Pierre Sterlé, known as the couturier of jewelry, created jewelry that expressed movement by utilizing elongated baguette-cut and round brilliant-cut diamonds to mimic supple fabric. While unsigned, this brooch embodies the seductive quality and nature of this new model.
