Footnotes

  • Commodore Matthew Perry's 1854 Treaty of Kanagawa opened Japan to commercial trade with United States. Many academics, artists and designers flocked to the formerly secluded nation. The Philadelphia Centennial Exposition of 1876 highlighted an ornate Japanese Pavilion with gardens and a vast bazaar. All manner of art and object was for sale to an enthralled public. Americans became enamored of the sensitive, naturalistic Japanese designs of even the most pedestrian household object.

Gorham's line of 'Art Silver' of the 1870s was focused almost exclusively on this Japanese aesthetic after 1877. Featuring hammered surfaces and incorporating copper and mixed-metal elements, the pieces created were elaborate and costly. Gorham entered a number of its Japanese style mixed-metal works in the Paris Exposition Universelle of 1878. As the manufacture of these handmade mixed-metal wares was so involved and expensive, production was relatively small and ultimately ceased in 1885.
