Octagonal 39 inch, .45 caliber rifled barrel with dovetailed German silver front blade sight and dovetailed buckhorn rear sight; long rat-tail tang with two screws; barrel stamped J.F. Gehrett on top flat between rear sight and tang. Flat lockplate with small panels of engraved scrollwork and stamped H.E. Leman/Lancaster, Pa; double set triggers. Brass mounts include nosecap, round ramrod thimbles, narrow beveled triggerguard with spur; engraved sideplate, buttplate, and four-piece patchbox with a heart cutout in the finial, rocker engraving on the side panels and unusual floral engraving on lid. Four silver inlays including: compass star on the cheekpiece, symmetrical eight-pointed star at the wrist and two elongated shield-shaped inlays on each side of wrist, all with rocker-engraved borders. Full stock of dark, highly figured tiger maple with slender buttstock typical of Huntingdon County; wooden ramrod with long brass tip.
Condition: Very good. Barrel with even dark brown patina showing some pitting around lock and bolster; clear signature; rear tang-screw replaced. Lock with dark grey patina and some wear to engraving and stamped markings and showing scattered pitting; hammer missing part of face; lock functioning, but set trigger does not engage; bolster loose. Furniture with dark, unpolished patina; toeplate screws replaced. Silver with yellow patina. Stock with scattered marks, small loss forward of bolster; replaced chip at toe: crack between center of lock and triggerguard; crack with large gap from sideplate screw to barrel and long, partially filled diagonal crack from barrel in front of sideplate flat to triggerguard.
