Ford Model N Cabriolet 1906

1906 Ford Model N Cabriolet
Chassis no. 3643

•Very rare early Ford
•Model T precursor
•Two-seat cabriolet coachwork
•Registered in France

Prior to his introduction of the ubiquitous Model T, a development that would change the course of motor manufacturing history, Henry Ford had been selectively working his way through the alphabet, commencing with his first production car, the Model A, in 1903. The Model A followed what was then typical of American practice, being powered by a twin-cylinder horizontally opposed engine, mounted beneath the seat, which drove the rear wheels via a two-speed epicyclic transmission with chain final drive. The Model B was a larger and more conventional car, being powered by a front-mounted inline four that drove the rear wheels by shaft. Henry Ford continued to produce both twin- and four-cylinder models but was not happy with the larger and more expensive offerings favoured by his business partner Alexander Malcolmson, being convinced that smaller and more affordable cars were the way froward. Introduced for 1906, the two-seater Model N was powered by a front-mounted four-cylinder engine displacing 2,442cc, and was priced at $500, less than half that of the twin-cylinder Model F and a mere fraction of that of the six-cylinder Model K. In conception it pointed towards the Model T, which replaced all Ford's other models when it was introduced in October 1908.

This rare example of a pre-Model T Ford was purchased by the current vendor around 15 years ago from well known French motor car dealer, Bruno Vendiesse, at a classic car show in Barcelona. Prior to Mr Vendiesse's ownership, the car had formed part of a private collection in the Netherlands. Rare in Europe, and even rarer in such original condition, this delightful Ford Model N is offered with an FFVE registration certificate.
