Acquired by the consignor directly from Man Ray at Café Man Ray, Los Angeles, 1947

Man Ray's interest in chess began in 1915 when he was encouraged to join the Marshall Chess Club in New York City by fellow Dadaist, Marcel Duchamp. In 1945 Man Ray was invited to present his designs for a chess set for an exhibition organized by Julien Levy titled The Imagery of Chess. The initial design was executed in wood, with the aluminum version being produced later in 1947
