Watercolour on ivory, handwritten inscription to the reverse Captain/ Sir John Charles Richardson/ Royal Navy/ died 1822, gilt-metal frame enclosed in a further gilt-mounted ebonised papier-maché frame.

Footnotes

  • The sitter in the present lot is believed to be Sir John Charles Richardson of Pitfour, 12th Baronet. Richardson was born legitimated by his parent's subsequent marriage circa 1785. He was the son of Sir George Richardson of Smeaton, 9th Baronet, and Mary Cooper.

    He succeeded to the title of 12th Baronet Richardson, of Pitfour Castle, co. Perth on 8 November 1804. He gained the rank of Commander in the service of the Royal Navy. He died on 12th April 1821, without issue and the baronetcy became dormant until 1837.
