R.M.S. Lusitania: a Limited Edition set of Lusitania Legacy golf clubs
As manufactured in the 1980's by John Letters from a salvaged Lusitania propeller, each bronze headed iron No. 3 to SW has a propeller symbol and 'Lusitania Legacy', the three wooden headed clubs and the irons are all fitted with Balmforth Fairway leather grips and are retained in its original blue lined mahogany case with brass fittings

Footnotes

  • Provenance: The current owner bought this set in 1991 from the project graphic designer and considers this to be the only surviving set.

John Letters purchased the metal from one of the four salvaged propellers in the mid-1980s. When the clubs were played with, they marked up very badly due to the softness of the bronze alloy. Consequently it is understood that the sets were recalled, then melted down and no further sets were manufactured.

R.M.S. Lusitania, a British ocean liner, was launched by Cunard in 1906; she was briefly the world's largest passenger ship.

100 years ago, on 7 May 1915, the Lusitania was torpedoed by a German U-boat, eleven miles off the southern coast of Ireland and inside the declared 'Zone of War'. Within 18 minutes she had sunk with the loss of 1,198 passengers many of whom were American and crew members. The sinking and great loss of life helped shift public opinion in the USA against Germany and influenced her eventual declaration of war in 1917.
