Black Sea Coast, Probably Trabzon, Late 19th Century
With curved blade of wootz steel double-edged at the point in front of the yelman, the latter and the back of the blade at the forte damascened with foliage and a pseudo inscription, the back of the blade with a narrow fuller over most of its length on each side above gold-damascened Turkish verses in nasta'liq between arabesques, the forte on each side with panels of calligraphy en suite, gilt copper hilt with downcurved quillons and langets, and grip of rounded section rising to a rounded pommel, profusely decorated overall with roped ovals and roundels set with fluted red corals (corallium rubrum) and imitation turquoise beads, the langets set on one side with a large triangular piece of turquoise incised with gilt poetic verse in nasta'liq, the other side and the pommel each set with a smaller piece of turquoise incised and gilt with foliage, in original gilt-copper scabbard (gilding worn) lined in wood covered in burgundy velvet (plush worn off), each side embossed and chased with cartouches inhabited by a bird and foliage against a pierced ground en suite, shaped suspension mounts en suite with the hilt and each set with a piece of turquoise, one incised with two profile busts, and the other engraved to form a bird, and with two rings for suspension
