Of mutton-fat jade and of flattened oval section, with a double scroll at the base and rising to a rounded pommel, inlaid overall with a design of gold flowering foliage set with cabochon rubies and emeralds

    Provenance:
    Acquired by the late owner from 'an elderly lady who had purchased a Mughal jade handle with jewels set into it a church sale for $35. I tracked her down and she agreed to see me; my mother was visiting at the time so off we went. I got that handle for a gold watch, a sapphire ring and $1,000 cash, but only after a robust exchange of old-fashioned haggling!'

Buyers' Premium and Charges

27.5% on the first £10,000 of the hammer price;
25% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £10,000 up to and including £450,000;
20% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £450,000 up to and including £4,500,000;
and 14.5% of the hammer price of any amounts in excess of £4,500,000.

VAT at the current rate of 20% will be added to the Buyer's Premium and charges excluding Artists Resale Right.
