    Literature
    K. Ertz, Die Maler Jan van Kessel, Lingen, 2012, under Jan van Kessel der Andere, no.31

The present painting is part of an oeuvre of about thirty works which have been identified as by this artist, including, for example, A swan, a mallard, a bittern, rabbits and fruits and vegetables, a landscape beyond (sale, Christie's, South Kensington, 2 November 2005, lot 48) and Kitchen interior with a negro (formerly with Noortman, Maastricht). This painter of 'impressive still lifes of good quality' is the Jan van Kessel who has often been confused with his better known namesake and contemporary, Jan van Kessel the Elder (see: A. van der Willingen and F. Meijer, A Dictionary of Dutch and Flemish Still-Life Painters Working in Oils, 1525-1725, Leiden, 2003, p. 122). Aside from obvious stylistic differences, both artists have a distinctive manner of signing.

We are grateful to Fred Meijer of the RKD for his assistance in cataloguing this lot at the time of the last sale.
