Footnotes

    Provenance 來源:
    Somerset de Chair (1911-1995)

The majestic jade phoenix is superbly carved standing upright against the naturalistic pierced rockwork. The phoenix, known as king of birds and said to appear only during the reigns of righteous Emperors and in times of peace, came to be associated with the empress.

Compare a similar but smaller (21cm high) pale green jade phoenix on rockwork, 18th century, from the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, illustrated by J.C.S.Lin, The Immortal Stone: Chinese Jades from the Neolithic Period to the Twentieth Century, Cambridge, 2009, p.134. See also a related pale green jade phoenix on rockwork, Qing dynasty, illustrated by Zheng Xinmiao, Compendium of Collections in the Palace Museum: Jade, Qing Dynasty, vol.9, Beijing, 2011, pl.141.

A related pair of pale green jade phoenix, Jiaqing, but of smaller size (26.4cm high), was sold at Sotheby's London on 11 May 2011, lot 28.

劍橋菲茨威廉博物館藏有一件十八世紀的青玉雕鳳凰,與本拍品類似但體積較小(21厘米高),可參閱林政昇著,《The Immortal Stone: Chinese Jades from the Neolithic Period to the Twentieth Century》,2009年,頁134。
