Footnotes

    Provenance 來源:
    Somerset de Chair (1911-1995)

The buffalo is a vital beast of the field for a rice-producing culture, and as such it represents the virtues of hard work and strength required for agricultural labour, as well as the wish for a successful harvest and prosperity. At a more elevated level, the buffalo also shows a spiritual aspect, representing the desire for a remote, bucolic existence in nature, and was the chosen vehicle for the founder of Daoism, Laozi, when he departed through the Hangu pass.
