THE MOST IMPORTANT OF CHAGALL'S ILLUSTRATED BOOKS, A UNIQUE EXEMPLAR IN SUPERB CONDITION. After the death of his wife, Bella, in 1944, Chagall began to focus his work on the themes of lost love, death, and reunion. When asked by his colleague, Jacques Schiffrin, to collaborate with his firm, Pantheon Books, on an illustrated book to be printed in the United States, Chagall found himself deeply drawn to the imagery from the Arabian Nights. It was for this project that Chagall was inspired to create his very first color lithographs, which proved to be a spectacular set of dreamy, other-wordly compositions that are rich in hue and personal context. Printmaker and collaborator Charles Sorlier commented that in this effort "Chagall found himself confronted with a text which corresponded to his art like no other." Chagall, who is considered amongst the greatest colorists who ever lived and the present undertaking can be interpreted as a genuine labor of love. Chagall's Four Tales from the Arabian Nights have been called the finest examples of color lithography produced in the United States prior to 1950. "The lithographs have almost the richness and depth of his paintings and the same irrepressible humor" (Artist & the Book).
Ten copies numbered I-X (plus 11 hors-commerce lettered A-K) of the first edition of Four Tales from the Arabian Nights contained proofs and an extra plate (13). Of those, the issues most commonly included only 13 proofs. This example contains 23, making it wholly unique. In superb condition with fresh colors and pristine sheets. Artist & the Book 51; Mourlot 36-47; Sorlier 36-47.
