Douglas 2¾hp c.1924
Frame no. 28511
Engine no. 68105

The Bristol-based Douglas Foundry commenced motorcycle production in 1907 with a machine powered by a horizontally-opposed twin, and would keep faith with this engine layout until it ceased making motorcycles in 1957. Fore-and-aft installation made for a slim machine with a low centre of gravity, and the design's virtues were soon demonstrated in competition, including wins at the Isle of Man TT and Six Days Trial prior to WWI. Discovered in France, this 'barn find' 2¾hp (350cc) Douglas has the sidevalve engine of fixed-head type with outside flywheel and EIC magneto ignition. The transmission comprises chain primary drive to a two-speed hand-change gearbox, with belt final drive. The front fork is of the side-spring type with stirrup front brake, while rear wheel retardation is achieved by a v-block belt-rim brake. There are no documents with this Lot, which is offered for restoration and sold strictly as viewed.
