HAMILTON, ALEXANDER. 1757-1804.
Autograph Letter Signed ("A Hamilton"), 1 p, 4to, Treasury Department, January 21, 1795, to THOMAS PINCKNEY, toned. Matted.
Provenance: Hamilton, Sep 4, 1975, lot 196.
HAMILTON WRITES TO THOMAS PINCKNEY WHOM HE WOULD BACK AS THE FEDERALIST PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE IN 1796. Thomas Pinckney was a dark-horse candidate from South Carolina. Hamilton's support of him set him on a collision course with John Adams, the other Federalist candidate. Hamilton is remitting £6000 from the Treasury to Pinckney for "articles procured for the frigates" and adds "I approve entirely of what you have done." At this time, Pinckney was serving as Ambassador to Britain.
