WORDSWORTH, WILLIAM. 1770-1850.
Autograph Manuscript Signed ("Wm Wordsworth"), My Heart Leaps Up, 1 p, oblong 8vo, n.p., April 7, 1840, inscribed on verso to ISABELLA FENWICK, matted and framed.

"THE CHILD IS FATHER OF THE MAN." One of the more well-known short lyrics of Wordsworth, containing one of his most famous lines. In full:

"My heart leaps up when I behold
A Rainbow in the sky;
So was it when my life began;
So is it now I am a Man;
So be it when I shall grow old,
Or let me die!
The Child is Father of the Man;
And I could wish my days to be
Bound each to each by natural Piety.
"

The verso of the manuscript is inscribed by Wordsworth "To Isabella Fenwick / either to be kept, / or given to whom she chuses. / Wm Wordsworth / his 70th Birthday." Fenwick was one of Wordsworth's closest friends in his later years, as well as his amanuensis; in 1843 Wordsworth dictated to her a series of recollections, known as the Fenwick Notes, relating to the composition of his works. According to the dealer's note on the back of the frame, this manuscript descended through the family of Dr. Thomas Arnold, Wordsworth's Lake District neighbor and the father of Matthew Arnold.
