Lot Details
A World War I era signed photograph of Walt Disney
1918-1919, silver gelatin print portrait of Disney in his Red Cross uniform, signed and inscribed at the lower right ("Yours truly / W.E. Disney"). Together with two letters from former Disney archivist David R. Smith, one dated 1985, the other 2014, the earlier one thanking the original owners for sharing their property with the archives, and the latter confirming that Smith reviewed this material during his period as archivist (photocopies of letters from 1977 between Smith and the original owners are also present, as is a copy of a 1977 San Jose Mercury News article about the Virginia Baker collection). With letter of commentary by Disney historian David Lesjak and a letter of authenticity of Disney autograph specialist Phil Sears.
Provenance: gift of Walt Disney to Virginia Baker; to Leslie Riddell (Virginia's daughter) by descent; sold privately 2014.
This handsome portrait of young Walt Disney captures a moment as he transitions to adulthood: he still bears a youthful face (and no mustache), but his pose is somber and unsmiling, suggesting a newly acquired world-weariness.
2 1/2 x 3 1/2 in.
