Footnotes

  • Literature:
Leslie Bowman, American Arts & Crafts, Virtue in Design, 1990, p. 81 for an illustration of the same sized model with replaced leather seat in the collection of LACMA, gift of Max Palevsky and Jodie Evans

The book notes that the design was copied from one by M.H. Baillie Scott

While this model is traditionally attributed to Harvey Ellis, two articles by David Cathers suggest that LaMont A. Warner, who was a student of Arthur Wesley Dow at the Pratt Institute of Brooklyn, was likely strongly influenced by his teacher and designed the Landscape scenes which reflect the work of Dow.
In addition, there is a Warner sketch of a miniature version of this settle which appeared in the Craftsman, 'Housekeeping in Miniature', June 1903, which precedes Harvey Ellis' illustrations for "An Urban House" which include this settle, in the Craftsman magazine of August 1903.
