Footnotes

  • Marc Chagall's undertaking of the The Bible was a monumental task and tour de force of printmaking. Not long after arriving in Paris from Russia, he was asked by the art dealer Amboise Vollard, to undertake the series of prints illustrating The Bible. It took him over 25 years, from 1931 to 1956, to complete all 105 prints, which were then published by Tériade in 1958, successor to Vollard. The scenes come from five books of the Bible and the majority depict scenes from Genesis and adhere closely to the Biblical text. To achieve this feat, Chagall traveled to Palestine to get a sense of the land itself. The noted art historian Meyer Schapiro, observed that Chagall was the ideal artist to have undertaken the task of illustrating The Bible: 'Chagall was prepared for this achievement by his receptivity of mind. He is a rare modern painter whose art has been accessible to the full range of his emotions and thoughts... He has represented themes of an older tradition not in a spirit of curiosity or artifice, but with a noble devotion.'
The complete set of handcolored etchings of The Bible offered here has only come to auction four times in the past twenty years.
