CRYPTOGRAPHY.
FRIEDMAN, WILLIAM F. 1891-1969. The Index of Coincidence and Its Applications in Cryptography. Publication No. 22. Paris: Librairie Militaire Universelle, 1922 [1921].
4to (272 x 220 mm). 87, [1] pp. Original printed tan wrappers. Edges toned, spine with some wear, last 10 leaves and lower wrapper with punctures affecting several letters of text on last 4 leaves (no loss). Without the rare appendix insert.

FIRST EDITION of this milestone of modern cryptography, and perhaps the single most important publication in the field. In it " ... Friedman reconstructed the settings of a rotor cypher machine ... in the form of the German Enigma ... (Kahn in Yardley, p 93). Introducing two new techniques, "One was brilliant. It permitted him [Friedman] to reconstruct a primary cipher alphabet without having to guess at a single plaintext letter. But the other was profound. For the first time in cryptology, Friedman treated a frequency distribution as an entity, as a curve whose several points were causally related, not as just a collections of individual letters that happen to stand in a certain order ... The result can only be described as Promethean, for Friedman's stroke of genius inspired the ... vital statistical tools that are indispensable to the cryptology of today" (Kahn). Galland, Cryptology, p 68; Kahn, Codebreakers, p 376-384.
