A UNIQUE GLIMPSE INTO THE LIFE OF THE CARTERS BEHIND THE WHITE HOUSE WALLS. John Shannon compiled his own personal record of the Carter years. The album includes photographs, press releases, invitations and photocopies for White House meetings with such important dignitaries as Deng Xiaoping, Vice Premier of the State Council of the People's Republic of China, and Madame Zhou Lin; Pope John II; Menachem Begin and Anwar Sadat; Queen Elizabeth, Prince Philip and the Queen Mother; former Presidents Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford; and the Shah of Iran and his wife Farah. Perhaps the most important event of the Carter Administration was the Camp David Accord between Begin and Sadat. Among the other visitors to the White House were Big Bird, ice-skating champion Peggy Fleming, Mel Torme, the Champion American Olympic Hockey Team and the cast of the musical Annie. There are also many family photographs of Miss Lillian, brother Billy, an often dour Amy Carter and the President jogging in track togs. Several photographs show Carter fishing and then battling an aggressive rabbit in a river; and clippings (but not the photograph) of when Mrs. Carter posed with serial-killer John Wayne Gacy in Chicago. There also are holiday cards, invitations and pictures of the tree for each of the Christmases the Carters celebrated in The White House. Two brief notes by the President and Mrs. Carter are pasted in the album. Two unidentified items were removed from the book at some unknown time, but it is otherwise undisturbed.
