Lot 1160
1876 20C MS65 PCGS
By 1876, Mint officials were well aware of the drastic mistake they had made by introducing this unusual denomination. The public confused the coin with the currently circulating quarter (much as they would confuse the Susan B. Anthony dollar with a currently circulating quarter a century later), creating economic loss and negative publicity. Thus, the mintage for 1876 consisted of only 14,400 pieces from the Philadelphia Mint (plus 1,500 Proofs) and 10,000 coins from the Carson City Mint (nearly all of which were melted). Of this tiny mintage, this is one of the best remaining survivors. Both sides present a sharply struck appearance, save for several of the stars on the right side of the obverse. A thin coating of natural patina adds character to the satiny, underlying surfaces. Housed in an early green holder. (PCGS 5299)

Sold for US$ 4,329 inc. premium
