Lot 1151
1936 5C Type Two (Brilliant Finish) Proof 66 PCGS
Approximately two-thirds of the 4,420 proofs delivered in 1936 display the Type One, or Satin finish. Survivors, however, are a bit rarer than those of their identically dated Type Two counterparts (this coin) because the satin finish specimens did not strike as receptive a chord among contemporary collectors, and many were not saved. This represents the first brilliant-finish proof Buffalo nickel issue and was an instant collector favorite. This modestly toned Gem specimen has razor-sharp detail and stunning underlying luster. Both sides have a light coating of golden-gray patina gained over years of careful storage. Housed in an early green label PCGS holder. (PCGS 3995)

Sold for US$ 1,638 inc. premium
