Footnotes

  • Provenance
The collection of Peter Whitehouse & Ted Moore.

The Yoruba bata ensemble originated in southwest Nigeria. It was traditionally associated with Sango/Chango, the thunder deity and often accompanied masquerade performances. The rhythms and sounds of the bata drums are an elaborate coded language. Different drums are associated with different areas of the body. Large and medium sized drums related to movements of the shoulders and chest, whilst the smallest drum controlled the waist, hips and feet.

Until the 1930s, bata drums were used exclusively in a religious context to evoke the presence of the Orisha, natural spirits, in the dancing bodies of the Yoruba worshippers. Grillo's interest in indigenous cultural imagery was inspired by his upbringing in Onitsha where he participated in a number of masquerades.
