  • "Undoubtedly one of the greatest judges of the modern age", Simonds was "mystified" by his appointment as Lord Chancellor in 1951 (ODNB). Amongst his duties was deciding whether certain claimants had the right to attend the Coronation Ceremony, carry the Queen's towel, present her with three maple cups, or find a glove for her right hand.
