The Austin Healey 100-6

'After a really grueling road test, I can say that this new sports model is ideal for Continental touring. It also stood up to lap after lap of the Nürburgring at racing speeds, without complaint, and that must be equivalent to a vast mileage under more humane conditions. Finally, it has the kind of appearance that will make many prospective purchasers reach for their check books.' - John Bolster on the Austin-Healey 100/6, Autosport, 12th October 1956.

Introduced for 1956, the 100/6 represented the most radical step forward in the Big Healey's development. Despite its initial success, sales of the original Austin-Healey 100 had begun to decline by the mid-1950s and so the model was revamped as the '100/6', BMC's 2.6-liter C-series six replacing the original four-cylinder Austin Atlantic engine. At the same time the wheelbase was lengthened from 7' 6" to 7' 8", which enabled the inclusion of two occasional seats in the rear of the BN4 variant. In 100-6 tune, the pushrod six produced 102bhp - 12bhp more than its predecessor - though the inevitable weight gain meant that there was little if any improvement in performance, the car's top speed remaining at 103mph or thereabouts. Although stylistically very similar to the preceding 100, the 100/6 was nevertheless easily distinguishable by its 'crinkle' radiator grille and bonnet-top air intake. In 1957 an improved six-port engine became available, and this 117bhp unit was fitted to all the newly introduced BN6 two-seater roadsters. Top speed improved to 111mph and 1.7 seconds was cut from the 0-60mph time.

The Motorcar Offered

This very handsome car is an original US delivered Two Seater Austin-Healey 100/6. As verified by its British Motor Industry Heritage Trust Certificate the car was delivered new through a New York agency. It was originally supplied as you see it here today, in the definitively classic color combination of Healey Blue over Ivory White with blue trim and top. Recorded as built on September 24-25, 1958 it was dispatched on October 2, with desirable additions of overdrive, wire wheels shod with Roadspeed tires, a laminated windshield and a heater.

Now offered for sale after a decade in the current ownership, it is this custodian who is responsible for the beautiful condition in which it is found today. Along the journey of his ownership he aimed to chart its history prior to his purchase. Bought by him in South Jersey in '04, it was by then in a somewhat tired state and was said to have resided in California for some time. It had been converted to disc wheels and appeared to once have had a roll bar fitted, which seemed to allude to some competitive use in its career. But perhaps the most interesting allusion to it having a more sporting past comes from the decoding of its engine number designation which places this as an 'H' series high compression unit. All in all this is an interesting aspect of its provenance that remains to be discovered.

Regardless, shortly after its acquisition, the owner ordered its Heritage Certificate and once its matched numbers status and originality was confirmed by this he submitted it to trusted local expert Knut Holzer of the British Motor Corporation for a thorough restoration.

Well-documented and recorded in photographs, the exacting work returned the Healey to its original two tone color, and refinished the car just as it would have emerged from the factory, only almost certainly to a higher quality finish. Sensibly, slight upgrades of a Stayfast top and a modern stainless steel exhaust system were added to the equation.

On its completion and delighted with how the car had turned out, the seller presented the car at a series of concours events where it was immediately coveted and began to earn awards. Over the course of the last 7 or 8 years, the tally of prizes has been quite numerous, and while occasionally driven for pleasure, the ownership has cautiously erred to protecting its condition by showing rather than touring.

Overall, an accurately restored example of the model in archetypal Healey livery.
