The Model T

The stories about Model T Fords are legend; some of them are even true. At first, the Model T was available in several colors - not just the black for which it is justly famous. But as production volumes increased, the paint process was delaying completion of the cars. When it was determined that black was the fastest drying color of automotive enamel paint, black was adopted for all Model Ts. And as volume increased, costs dropped – and so, too, did the prices.

The Model T was a very basic automobile featuring a 176.7 cubic-inch L-head, four-cylinder engine with a cast iron block. The horsepower may have been rated at a modest 22.5, but the torque was a much healthier 83 pound per foot at a low 900rpm. The sturdy engine was mated to a two-speed planetary transmission and a torque tube transmitted power to the rear axle. The I-beam front axle and the drawn steel rear axle housing were suspended by transverse leaf springs. A contracting band provided breaking at the transmission, while the hand-brake engaged rear wheel brakes.

The Motorcar Offered

Then as now, the way most enthusiasts got into the hobby of car collecting was with a Model T. Acquired by Middleton in the late summer of 1959 from V.R. Burch, Sr. of Liberty, Texas, this bustle-back T Roadster is the quintessential example of the model—simple, purposeful, and fun. Finished in black, of course, with matching black leather seats and top, it is the subject of an older restoration that has gained considerable character today. Fitted with an electric starter, as was common by 1924, this T will be a joy to drive after some light recommissioning following the last few years of dry storage.

The Model T is one of the best ways to get into the classic car hobby or to build out a collection. With so many Model T Touring cars around, it is a rare sight to see another body style, especially one that was only produced for the last few years of production.
