Chassis no. SBX8310
'In short: these cars combine advanced engineering and safety specifications with traditional Rolls-Royce standards of craftsmanship. In the manner of their performance they are as revolutionary as the Silver Ghost was 59 years ago' announced Rolls-Royce, launching the Silver Shadow and Bentley T-Series in 1965.

The foregoing was no mere flight of fancy, for with the introduction of the Silver Shadow and its Bentley T-Series sister car, Rolls-Royce brought its body/chassis engineering bang up to date by switching to unitary construction, while at the same time retaining all the hallmarks of a traditional hand-crafted product. The Shadow/T-Series' all-round independent suspension and power-operated four-wheel disc brakes were both 'firsts' for Rolls-Royce, while John Blatchley's new styling appealed to the younger generation of Rolls-Royce and Bentley owner-drivers more prevalent from the mid-1960s onwards and enabled the company to keep abreast of fashion. Designed to be smaller and more manageable cars, they were intended to sell in larger numbers to a wider range of customers than hitherto.

Elsewhere, the newcomers represented evolution rather than revolution, employing the preceding Silver Cloud/Bentley S-Series' well-tried 6.2-litre V8 engine, albeit in up-rated specification (in accordance with company tradition, the power output remained undisclosed). The V8 continued in 6.2-litre form until the need to maintain power while conforming to US emissions regulations saw it enlarged to 6,750cc in 1970. Notable prior developments had included the adoption of GM400 automatic transmission and air conditioning as standard.

On the road, the Shadow/T-Series afforded its owners the advantage of an eye line higher than that of most other cars, giving its occupants a commanding view of their surroundings, while electrically adjustable seats ensured unrivalled comfort. Summing up the ownership experience in 1989, 'Classic & Sportscar' observed: 'There's plenty of pleasure to be had from driving a Shadow or T1, probably at town speeds more than anything. You learn to cope with its size very quickly. It soothes its driver like no other car.'

Predating Bentley's remarkable 1980s resurgence, the T-Series was produced in far fewer numbers than the equivalent Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow, the ratio being 11:1 in the Shadow's favour, and is considerably rarer today. And few would disagree with the assertion that the Bentley's shorter, smoothly profiled radiator grille was much better suited to the body than the taller and more angular Rolls-Royce item.

Sold new in Brussels, this 6.2-litre Bentley T-Series was registered for the first time on 17th April 1970 and has remained there in the hands of its first owner ever since. The car has always been registered in Belgium with the number '3869B' and comes with Belgian registration papers. It has never been restored and remains in generally very good original condition, with a nicely patinated interior.
