1969 Maserati Sebring 3700 Coupé
Coachwork by Carrozzeria Vignale

Chassis no. AM101.S10.683
Engine no. AM101 S10683
Maserati's survival strategy for the 1960s centred on establishing the company as a producer of road cars. The Modena marque's new era began in 1957 with the launch of the Touring-bodied 3500GT. A luxury '2+2', the 3500GT drew on Maserati's competition experience, employing a tubular chassis frame and an engine derived from the Alfieri-designed 350S sports racing car unit of 1956. Suspension was independent at the front by wishbones and coil springs, while at the back there was a conventional live axle/semi-elliptic arrangement. Power output of the twin-cam six was around 220bhp initially; later examples produced 235bhp on fuel injection. Built on the short-wheelbase but otherwise similar chassis of the Vignale-bodied 3500GT spyder, the Sebring 2+2 coupé arrived in 1962. By now a five-speed gearbox, four-wheel disc brakes and fuel injection were standard equipment, while automatic transmission, air conditioning and a limited-slip differential were options. Introduced in 1965, the Sebring 3700 (or Series II) came with a 3.7-litre, 245bhp engine. Some cars left the factory with 4.0-litre units towards the end of Sebring production in 1969, by which time only 242 Series II cars had been made.

The car offered here was delivered new to France and first registered in February 1969, so almost certainly was produced towards the end of 1968. Dated 10th January 1969, the original purchase order with Officine Alfieri Maserati is on file, recording the Sebring's despatch to Thepennier, the Maserati agent in Saint-Cloud. The car was delivered equipped with the factory options of air conditioning and Borrani wire wheels. A matching numbers example, it has covered a believed genuine 69,300-or-so kilometres from new.

From 1973 until 2014 this Maserati had only one owner, who cherished it for more than 40 years. Between 1981 and 2011 the Sebring was stored on blocks in a favourable environment, which lends credence to the unusually low odometer reading. When the car was re-commissioned, the engine was rebuilt by Euroculasse in Talaudière (Haute-Loire) and the cylinder head modified to accept unleaded fuel. The Borani wheels were refurbished in Milan and the Lucas injection overhauled in England. Finished in Celeste Chiaro (Light Blue), the exterior was repainted some time ago and still presents very well, while the senape (mustard) leather interior remains in original condition. Benefiting from recent general cosmetic detailing, the car comes with the aforementioned bill of sale; correspondence between the Maserati agent and the factory; 1969 import paperwork; old French Carte Grise; Belgian registration Form 705; and Belgian technical inspection.

Previously somewhat neglected, the Sebring model has begun to be better appreciated in recent years, with good quality examples increasingly in demand. Beautiful and rare, it still represents excellent value for money, especially when compared to the contemporary Aston Martin. This particular European delivery car has a continuous history and is an opportunity not to be missed to join the exclusive 'Trident' club in the year of Maserati's 100th anniversary.
