Footnotes

  • Provenance
    Studio Inventory no. E6841
    Private Collection, U.S.A.

    Exhibited
Canterbury, Art for Science, 1964, as Two Glasgow Children, where lent by Mrs. Eardley

    Literature
    F. Pearson, Joan Eardley, National Galleries of Scotland, 2007, ill.27. This drawing appears pinned to the top of the easel in Audrey Walker's photograph of Eardley at work in her Townhead studio.

This study of two young boys is an archetypal example of works Eardley produced in her studio in St James' Road in the mid 1950s. She was well-known locally, and children flocked to her door in search of a sweet treat in exchange for a few minutes' modelling. Most of these studies were in pastel, a medium which lent itself to deft, colourful depictions of restless 'weans'. The vibrant Townhead area which so inspired the artist was razed as Glasgow City Council cleared thousands of families to new peripheral estates like Easterhouse. Shuggie is a derivation of the name Hugh.
