Two pairs of inscribed encaustic floor tiles from Burgundy, 15th century
Each forming the left half of a four-tile panel, with the initial N surrounded by the Gothic inscription 'Seule' and star, leaves and branches around the inscription, 13.5cm square (some chips and wear) (4)

Footnotes

  • These tiles are very similar to those in the 'Room of the Poors' at the Hôtel-Dieu in Beaune, Burgundy. The Hôtel-Dieu was founded in 1443 as a hospital and refuge for the poor and was the most important of several such institutions founded by the Chancellor of the Kingdom of Burgundy, Nicolas Rolin (1376-1462) and his wife Guigone de Salinas (1403-70). The tiles have the initials N and G, while the inscription 'Seule' (the only one) with star is Nicolas Rolin's motto, referring to his wife.

Buyers' Premium and Charges

For all Sales categories, buyer's premium excluding Cars, Motorbikes, Wine, Whisky and Coin & Medal sales, will be as follows:

Buyer's Premium Rates
27.5% on the first £20,000 of the hammer price;
26% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £20,000 up to and including £700,000;
20% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £700,000 up to and including £4,500,000;
and 14.5% of the hammer price of any amounts in excess of £4,500,000.

VAT at the current rate of 20% will be added to the Buyer's Premium and charges excluding Artists Resale Right.
