Folio (340 x 218 mm). Π2 A4 2A-Y6 Z4 2B-2Z6 *3A-*3D6 *3E8 3A-4B6 4C2. 458 leaves. With engraved frontispiece portrait of Shakespeare by Martin Droeshout (4th state). Contemporary calf, rebacked preserving original spine with red morocco lettering piece. Custom chemise and morocco-backed slipcase. Frontispiece and title re-hinged and with light soiling, small repairs and a couple closed tears, title with upper corner renewed affecting rules, lower margin of frontispiece renewed, a few other small repairs/tears in prelims, scattered minor spots and browning throughout and occasional ink stains (larger on 3A1), about six long closed tears within text (on R6 with slight loss), chip to 2K5 with loss of several words, 2N4 & 2X2 with loss to lower margin (the latter affecting 1 letter), from 3X1 to end with dampstain including brown spot over text (the non-Shakespearean plays); wear and rubbing to binding, endpapers worn and repaired, with pen trials and other ownership markings.
Provenance: William M. Burwell (ownership inscription to title, scattered marginalia); Charles Stewart Todd (note of inheritance to inside back cover, dated 1908).

FOURTH FOLIO EDITION of the "most important work in the English language" (Pforzheimer). This is the Knight/Saunders issue; all three issues of the fourth folio were probably issued contemporaneously. William M. Burwell (1809-1888) was the author and owner of "Avenal" house (historic landmark in VA, entertaining such guests as General Robert E. Lee & Edgar Allen Poe), and son of William A. Burwell, secretary to Thomas Jefferson. Charles Stewart Todd, (1863-1908), was his grandson. ESTC R24524; Gregg III:1121; Pforzheimer 910; Wing S2917.
