Footnotes

  • IWC Portuguese with Caliber 98
In 1939, IWC received a request from a Portuguese client looking for a wristwatch that would be as precise as a marine chronometer. To accommodate this request, IWC had to use a pocket watch movement, which allowed them to place the crown at 3 o'clock. That first Portuguese model, and the examples that followed, featured the Caliber 74 movement, which at the time was the slimmest and most reliable pocket watch movement. Evolving from the caliber 74, the caliber 98 was produced by IWC from 1936 through 1946, and had a diameter of 16 ¾ lines. Measuring 37.8mm, it was one of the larger movements produced by the company at the time, compared to the typical wristwatch diameter of 33mm or smaller. The dial of the Portuguese model also featured Arabic numerals and a thin bezel, both of which contributed to making the watch appear larger. It is estimated that less than 310 Portuguese were produced with the Caliber 74, and less than 375 were produced with the Caliber 98.

Both the large case size and contemporary dial design has led to the Portuguese model becoming a classic amongst collectors.
