Lot 1360
1851 Augustus Humbert $50 887 THOUS., Reeded Edge
K-6, R.4. Generally speaking, all varieties of the Humbert and U.S. Assay Office fifty dollar octagonal coins are very scarce, however, the Reeded Edge varieties are somewhat more obtainable than their earlier Lettered Edge counterparts. This example, featuring .887 fineness on the ribbon above the eagle, will provide a perfect coin that represents Territorial gold fifties. This example shows attractive deep honey-gold color over surfaces that show the expected amount of wear and abrasions. Several of the edges exhibit minor bumps, typical of large octagonal shaped $50 slugs. The typical strike is responsible for some of the peripheral legends being only partially readable, more so than the wear -- AUGUSTUS HUMBERT, in particular, is illegible. Listed on page 381 of the 2014 Guide Book. (PCGS 10214)

Sold for US$ 14,625 inc. premium
