Footnotes

  • The Czech born painter and graphic artist, Oskar Pafka, began his studies at the Professional School of Ceramics in his home town of Znojmo. Showing great promise there, he was soon accepted to the Master School for Monumental Sculpting at the School of Applied Arts in Vienna. Though committed to the program and the desire to hone his talents, his studies were interrupted by military service in the First World War -- a devastating experience that would ultimately define his artistic style and sensability. Traversing between Prague, Berlin, Vienna and Znojmo, Pafka produced artwork imbued with dark humor, symbolism, allegorical figures, linear motifs, and strong subjects. His work is so arresting that it demands attention. It is therefore not surprising that Pafka had detractors, and as cited in Keith Holz's Modern German Art for the Thirties: Paris, Prague, and London, the Director of the German Section of the Modern Gallery, Rudolf Hönigschmidt wrote in 1937 "...I regard the painter Pafka for an odd excentric, with a sick erotic squint-eyed fantasy -- but without capability to translate his awkward ideas into an artistic view."
