Rectangular with rounded corners, the cover set with a rectangular panel painted with a scene depicting Minerva holding her arm around Justice whilst Mars signs "PA(X)" with an olive branch, within a chased and blue enamelled stiff leaf frame on a matted ground flanked by four applied gold acanthus scrolls, with further blue enamelled stiff leaf border, the sides decorated with an upper chased acanthus band and below blue enamel and paillons rope twist band, corners embellished with stylised blue enamelled flowers on a matted ground, the underside decorated with a blue enamelled panel with paillons rope twist bands, enclosed by three alternating geometric bands and acanthus spandrels, length 9cm, weight 134gms.

  • In Greek mythology, Mars was the god of war; Minerva was the daughter of Jupiter, born from his head. She was the goddess of wisdom, learning and arts, but also the protector of justice and a war goddess, but unlike Mars she fought for the defences of just causes.

Buyers' Premium and Charges

Buyer's Premium Rates
27.5% on the first £10,000 of the hammer price;
25% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £10,000 up to and including £450,000;
20% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £450,000 up to and including £4,500,000;
and 14.5% of the hammer price of any amounts in excess of £4,500,000.

VAT at the current rate of 20% will be added to the Buyer's Premium and charges excluding Artists Resale Right.
