Footnotes

  • Literature
    J. Hayes, Rowlandson: Watercolours and Drawings, London, 1972, illustrated no. 119

Although the artist identifies the building depicted as being by Inigo Jones it is actually John Vanbrugh's house in Whitehall court designed and built between 1700-01 and demolished in 1898. The design came in for some criticism at the time with the satirist Jonathan Swift describing it as 'Goose-Py' in a poem of 1703. Thereafter the house came to be colloquially known as Goose Pie House. Rowlandson's description of the building is sketchy but generally accurate and true to its original outline.
